Introduction
For centuries, Highgate was a village quite separate from London (and even from nearby Hampstead) and still today it retains its own distinct identity - as a pleasant stroll down Highgate’s fine old High Street will soon tell you.
It is perched on the highest hill in London with the summit 443 feet above sea level, and it affords breathtaking views of the sprawling city below.
As with Hampstead, its height and separation from London endowed it with a great reputation as a healthy spot to live with its “sweet salutary air”.
16th century
From the 16th century, aristocrats began building splendid houses here, followed by a variety of elegant 18th century residences, then by big Victorian homes which provide many of today’s most desirable properties.
From much of Highgate, it is only a stroll to Hampstead, with its larger number of amenities and the Heath.
