Tufnell Park Tufnell Park is an attractive residential area with a wide array of properties built from the 1850s onwards. It is leafy, well located and, as an environmental area, quiet with little traffic. History Tufnell Park Road runs along the line of an old Roman road and for centuries the area was renowned for its dairy farms which kept London to the south supplied with milk. Housing development got underway in the 1850s as London spread north to accommodate a fast-growing population. Where cattle had grazed for centuries, and milkmaids had sung as they worked, builders laid out broad streets lined with large brick-built houses. Tufnell Park was more fortunate than several of its neighbours. Whereas railway lines were sliced through Kentish Town and Camden in the 19th century, they by-passed Tufnell Park. Then as major roads were built in the 20th century, these too curved round rather than through the peaceful enclave. Today, Tufnell Park is an ‘environmental area’ with special measures in place to deter commuter traffic. This may make it a little difficult for friends to find you the first time they drive to your home and are faced with negotiating the maze of the one-way systems – but it offers huge benefits in reduced pollution, noise and traffic jams. Location Tufnell Park is conspicuously well located. To the west, less than a mile away, is Hampstead Heath, with its 800 acres of rolling grassland, trees, ponds, hedgerows and bog, and of course Hampstead Village with all its galleries, museums, shops, restaurants and theatres (for more information click on ‘Hampstead’). To the east is Islington with its own array of shops, restaurants and lively nightlife. To the south is Camden with its astonishing variety and dynamism including one of Britain’s most famous street markets, a profusion of nightclubs, and an abundance of restaurants (for more information click on ‘Camden Town’). And, of course, it is only a short journey to the West End or the City. Properties Property is not as expensive here as in Hampstead or Highgate, or even the small chic areas nearby like Primrose Hill where many of the glitterati choose to live. Consequently while Tufnell Park has its famous residents too, it is also a popular area for first-time buyers, who enjoy the area’s wide variety of flats and family houses with large gardens. Transport It is served by the Northern Line on the Underground, with Tufnell Park station in the south of the area, and by the overland Silverlink metro network with Upper Holloway station in Tufnell Park’s northern tip. |
