West Hampstead West Hampstead is separated from Hampstead only by the width of Finchley Road and, since it shares so much of what Hampstead has to offer, we suggest that you click on ‘Hampstead’ for a fuller description. Amenities It is true that you have to be a determined walker to stride all the way to Hampstead Heath, which is on the far side of Hampstead from West Hampstead (though it’s only a very short car journey). But, on the other hand, you have most of the other amenities which the residents of Hampstead enjoy right on your doorstep: the cultural life of the theatres, museums and galleries; the schools; and an abundance of restaurants, cafes, bars and clubs. As you might imagine, all of this makes for a lively nightlife. For up-market shopping in boutiques and craft shops you can make the short journey to Hampstead Village (or alternatively go into the nearby West End).On the other hand, West Hampstead has the superstores which Hampstead lacks including a Waitrose, Habitat, Sainsburys, a Homebase and the O2 entertainment centre. There is even, at the heart of the area, one of London’s oldest cricket grounds and alongside it that rarity nowadays - grass tennis courts. Property in the area There’s an eclectic mix of homes: grand houses and villas with gardens, mansion flats and modern apartments, something for everyone, in fact. Much of it was built in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods and many of the houses display splendid bay windows and pointed gables. The residents These are a younger crowd than in Hampstead, with a lot of singles and first-time buyers. Transport The area is exceptionally well-served for transport by the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines on the Underground with stations at Swiss Cottage and Finchley Road, and by both the overland Thameslink and Silverlink metro network with stations at West Hampstead and Finchley Road and Frognal. |
